Drip irrigation with soil applied fertilizers recorded significantly higher yield over furrow irrigation with soil applied fertilizers which attained to 28% yield increase over control (see in the chart). This yield increase resulted from higher number of fruits per plant and fruit yield per plant in drip irrigation over furrow irrigation. The better performance under drip was attributed to maintenance of favorable soil water conditions in the root zone, which in turn
helped the plants to utilize water and nutrients more efficiently from the wetted area (Ibrahim, 1992; Lara, et al., 1996; Singh et al., 2002). The superior yield advantage displayed in drip irrigation over furrow irrigation is fairly expanded by the application of fertilizers through drip irrigation water; fertigation treatments resulted in higher fruit yield and yield parameters over drip irrigation
Total fruit yield was significantly higher in 75% and 100% NPK fertigation, respectively than 50% fertigation rate, which accounted to 12% and 22% yield increase, respectively. Increased Mean fruit weight and fruit yield per plant was also significantly higher in 100% fertigation rate (117 g and 1.84 kg/plant) compared to control (86 g and 1.07 kg/plant) and drip irrigation (103 g and 1.37 kg/plant), respectively. Fertigation rate with 100% NPK water soluble fertilizers resulted also in increased late season extra large and large fruit
yields compared to yield response with soil applied NPK. Drip applied nutrients extended the season of large fruit harvest by maintaining plant nutrient concentrations late in the season. Similar results have been obtained by Aramini et al., (1995).
Reducing the chance of BLOSSOM-END ROT occurrence
Blossom end rot is the most common physiological disorder of greenhouse tomato. The disorder is due to a calcium deficiency in the fruit and can occur even when there are acceptable calcium levels in the fertilizer feed solution.?
What it looks like: The tomato plants appear healthy, but as the tomatoes ripen, an ugly black patch appears on the bottoms. The black spots on tomatoes look leathery. When you try to cut off the patch to eat the tomato, the fruit inside looks mealy
What causes it: Your plants aren’t getting enough calcium. There’s either not enough calcium in the soil, or the pH is too low for the plant to absorb the calcium available. Tomatoes need a soil pH around 6.5 in order to grow properly. This soil pH level also makes it possible for them to absorb calcium. Uneven watering habits also contribute to this problem. Hot, dry spells tend to exacerbate blossom end rot.What to do about it: Before planting tomatoes , conduct a soil test to find out soil nutrient content, for further reference of fertilizer application.
